A chorus pedal creates a floating effect that occurs when multiple sources emit sound of nearly the same pitch. The chorus effect occurs naturally in choirs, where voices often do not have exactly the same pitch. This creates a thick and broad sound. A chorus pedal mimics this analog effect by splitting the incoming signal into two and delaying one of them. The pedal then mixes the signals back together, creating the familiar, dreamy effect. Sometimes there’s also a low-frequency oscillator to adjust the pitch of the second signal. Additionally, there are often other controls to further customize the chorus effect to your liking.

For guitarists, chorus is a very welcome effect, especially when playing in a trio. The Police’s guitarist, Andy Summers, is perhaps the most famous user. Other well-known chorus users include John Frusciante and Mike Stern, and Kurt Cobain was also crazy about it.
