MIDI cable

MIDI stands for Musical Instrument Digital Interface and is a protocol that allows electronic musical instruments to exchange information. It is a language that allows MIDI equipment to communicate with each other. It works with commands that let you give commands such as “select preset 12” or “add vibrato”. It’s basically an electronic music notation for devices.

MIDI cable
So MIDI is a set of conventions that allow devices to communicate with each other. In order to transmit information from one device to another, a MIDI cable is required. The classic 5-pin DIN cable is the standard cable you need most often. The 5-pin DIN (Deutsche InstitUt für Normung) connector is the standard plug most commonly used. In addition, many effect pedals nowadays have a TRS connection with which the information is received. As a result, there is no longer really a standard connector. Some effect pedals send MIDI data over the Ring of this plug, others over the Sleeve.

Choose the right cable
Make sure you choose the correct cable and connector. A 5-pin Din cable is standardized and will work in almost all cases. With TRS connections you have to make sure that you buy the right adapter. You can also choose to purchase a MIDI box to which you connect multiple pedals. On most MIDI boxes you can choose the right variant with jumpers. Moreover, you can use a standard TRS cable and you do not have to purchase an adapter.
