If you’ve ever heard a guitar solo that sounded like the amp was about to explode, you\u2019ve probably encountered fuzz. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
This legendary effect started as an accident when guitarists and engineers in the \u201850s and \u201860s discovered that broken amps could produce a gritty, gnarly tone. Its first use is widely attributed to guitarist Grady Martin<\/strong> in 1961 on Marty Robbins\u2019 hit song Don\u2019t Worry<\/em>. And like all great things in rock\u2019n\u2019roll, it was an accident: a fault in a mixing console that propelled engineer Glenn<\/strong> Snoddy<\/strong> to recreate the extreme, square-wave distortion \u2018mistake\u2019 in a stand-alone device using three germanium transistors. This sound was later replicated in the first commercial fuzz pedal: the Maestro FZ-1 Fuzz-Tone<\/b>, developed by Gibson in 1962. This pedal gained worldwide fame when Keith Richards used it in the iconic song Satisfaction<\/i> by The Rolling Stones. From that moment, fuzz was no longer a happy accident but a crucial element in rock music.<\/p>\n\n That seminal design spawned the Fuzz Faces<\/strong>, Tone<\/strong> Benders<\/strong> and Muffs<\/strong> that we love to this day, with germanium transistors remaining at the heart of the most sought-after-models. Germanium transistors have always been highly inconsistent and incredibly temperature sensitive, however, so silicon transistors became an early alternative.
\nThe sound differences are much debated, suffice to say a certain Mr Hendrix used fuzz pedals with both germanium and silicon transistors<\/strong> in the late 1960s as the latter became available.<\/p>\n\n
