The Bonsai is JHS’ tribute to one of the greatest pedals ever created – the Tube Screamer. Following in the steps of their Muffuletta, the Bonsai utilizes a simple rotary knob to switch through nine classic, vintage, rare, or hard to find variations of the Screamer.

The Bonsai is exact replication, not emulation.  When you choose a mode on the Bonsai rotary, you are actually activating components specific to each mode and playing the circuit Josh chose along with all the quirks, drift, vintage mojo, and individuality that a vintage pedal has.

Lets take a look at the 9 modes of the Bonsai based on the 9 pedals

OD-1 – 1977
An overall brighter and slightly higher gain mode that does not utilize the Tone knob. This mode also inverts signal just like the original and has asymmetrical clipping. The OD-1 is magical at boosting other drives or amps into singing saturation.

TS-808 – 1979
The classic low gain with that signature pronounced mid range.

TS-9 – 1982
Nearly identical to the TS-808 but with a slightly more pushed low-mid range.

MSL, Power or L Series – 1985
Though metal is in the name, this sound doesn’t quite inspire the modern metal djent we think of.  Still it has a higher gain sound with a more low end and an overall more gooey feel.

TS-10 – 1986
Made famous by John Mayer, this model is a slight upgrade from the TS9 for the late ’80s. Bluesy, crisp, more low end roll off and low gain.

Exar OD-1 1989
The EXAR is a Polish made TS-style pedal that has a slightly different drive character with a little more gain than the classic screamers as well as a slightly more transparent feel.

TS-7 (+mode) – 1999
The hot mode on this version gives you the highest gain sound in the Bonsai. More low end and dirt fill out the tone to have you shredding away.

Keeley Mod Plus – 2002
Robert Keeley’s classic mod tightens up the tone on the original giving you smoother mid range and high frequencies, and increased bass response.

JHS Strong Mod – 2008
Our own mod we’ve been doing since 2008 is much cleaner and overall more powerful. The mode has more pronounced higher nd low end drop offs.

JHS Pedals

JHS Pedals JHS Pedals began in 2007 when founder Joshua Heath Scott modified his own Boss Blues Driver, leading to selling optimized pedals locally in Jackson, Mississippi. By 2008, the brand name JHS Pedals emerged, and Josh released early favorites like the Pulp ’N Peel compressor, Morning Glory overdrive, and All American boost. After moving to Kansas City in 2009, JHS expanded from a mod shop into its own pedal production facility, steadily growing into an internationally recognized boutique brand. one-First Philosophy & Creative Presence The company is known not only for its pedals, but also for personality. Josh shares his passion through The JHS Show on YouTube—a mix of pedal stories, demos, and lore. He’s been described as “the Bill Nye meets Mister Rogers of guitar”. Their mantra? “If it sounds good, it is good.” They focus on tone above all—no gimmicks, just honest designs. Angry Charlie is Legends of Fuzz & 3 Series Their Legends of Fuzz line revives classic fuzz tones with modern improvements—models like Bender, Smiley or Crimson reference iconic circuits with fresh tweaks. In 2020, they launched the affordable 3 Series, offering core effects like overdrive, delay, fuzz, and reverb for around $99—ideal for beginners or secondary boards. Colour Box & Artist Pedals The Colour Box preamp/DI earned praise for its versatility and tone—available in V2 with built-in boost, chorus, and reverb options. JHS also collaborates with artists like Paul Gilbert (PG-14) and Andy Timmons (AT+ overdrive) to create signature pedals with real musician input. Culture & Community JHS’s Kansas City workshop is described as a fun, quirky place where collaboration is key—complete with vintage toys, team hangouts, and Josh Scott working alongside employees on the factory floor. Their cultural values include experimentation, teamwork and authenticity—embodied by slogans like “just try stuff” and “companies don’t make pedals, people do”. Product Overview • Extensive lineup: from fuzz, delay, compressor and overdrive to utilities like buffers and summing amps. • Modding roots: they still offer modified pedals based on classic designs, adding tonal flexibility and boost switches. • Accessible pricing: the 3 Series offers budget appeal, while premium models serve tone purists and collectors. • Content-driven brand: through The JHS Show, musicals like Pedals: The Musical, and blog storytelling, the brand builds an ongoing narrative around every pedal. Why Choose JHS? • Broad and consistent range with pedals for every genre: from blues rock to ambient, from country to metal. • Tone-first design: every pedal is made based on musical vibration, not marketing tricks. • Community & entertainment: JHS builds not only products, but also stories and knowledge—through YouTube series, musicals like Pedals: The Musical, and blog articles about guitar history. • American quality with personality: all pedals crafted by hand in Missouri, reflecting precision, creativity, and humor.
