J Rockett Ape (The Analog Preamp Experiment) is an extremely handy tool and flexible extension for your delay pedals and effects setups.
Depending on the configuration, the pedal performs different functions in the setup: In a serial setup, the Analog Preamp Experiment (APE) is placed in front of the delay pedal. In this setting, the APE brings the legendary Echoplex EP sound as a classic preamp without any control options, while the controls of the delay remain unchanged.
The pedal runs internally at 22.5V and introduces a fat clarity, width and clean warmth into your sound. Pressing the Loop footswitch activates the knobs, Repeats works as Treble Boost, Mix as Output Volume and Rec gives the signal a nice drive.
If you use the send and return jacks of the APE you can also switch the delay pedal into the loop and let the APE take over some of the controls. In this setting, the Analog Preamp Experiment takes control of the repeats and the mix, while the adjustable Rec level controls the amount of gain in the repeats.
In this setting, there are countless possibilities of sound design and it is definitely recommended to take your time to discover the various possibilities. You can also try overdrives or boosts in the loop and you will find some amazing sounds. Of course, the pedal also works well with bass guitars!
