Flanger pedal

Abby Road Studios
A flanger pedal creates a floating effect just like a chorus pedal does. The term flanging originated in 1966 in the Abbey Road studios in London. There, a music track on one tape was duplicated to another tape. By touching the edge of one of the coils (flange), that coil temporarily slowed down. This caused a short delay. You achieve the flange effect by mixing both tapes together again.

Flanging effect in pedals
A low-frequency oscillator (LFO) provides the flanger effect in effect pedals. This LFO provides variation in the ‘playback speed’. Often you can set both the frequency and the range on your pedal. Sometimes it is also possible to set the feedback. This sets the amount by which the signal re-passes through the LFO.

Famous songs/albums
Well-known songs/albums in which a flanger is used include the album Electric Ladyland by Jimi Hendrix, the song Killer Queen (Queen), I feel Love (Donna Summer) and Dani California (Red Hot Chili Peppers).
